It's a new year, and with a fresh beginning comes the unbridled hope of being better organized in 2015! (We know we're not the only ones)

To get started, we looked back over some of the projects we've completed in recent years to pull together a few tips for staying tidy.

First up, our Lincoln Park project!

When you have a lot of small items, group them and contain them. The box-like shelves above create a clear boundary around the objects inside.

Next we wanted to feature a Wilmette Residence, with a custom home office system

Every house needs a "mission control station"-f yours isn't always pristine, consider hiding it when it's not in use. Furthermore, this wall-mounted storage unit pulls out from the wall to allow for an extra layer of books behind the façade. When storage is at a premium, be creative!

Combining open and closed storage is a great storage solution. Open shelves can house the items that display well, and closed shelving can hide the junk! As a bonus, the combo plan creates a nice aesthetic balance (such as above) and makes the room feel larger than when only enclosed shelving is used.

Finally, organized entry-ways. In nearly every residential project we have had the honor of working on, a mudroom has been in high demand. Lots of cubbies, hanging space, and a place to sit are key elements. If you don't have the option of a separate room, a well-designed cupboard can often do the job.
